Over the weekend one of the support RIBs for the 18’ skiffs was damaged (punctured) while tied up against the dock at low tide as a result of rubbing up against oysters, which are growing on the support struts and ladders. The club is undertaking a clean-up of these.For the time being, the RIBs are not to be tied up to the front deck at low tide until the oysters are removed. Members should also be mindful of the danger to their feet.It will be low tide this Saturday at 12pm!!!

This weekend
This weekend some of our sailors will be interstate at the Australian Masters National Championship. We are wishing them fair winds and the best of luck at this event.For those staying at home, we will have sprint races at the club.
Wednesday twilight racing
Twilight sailing continues on Wednesday evenings from 5.30-7.30pm until the end of daylight savings. This Wednesday MarkSetBot will be at the club demonstrating their robotic marks at our twilight session. This is the same mark technology that is being used in the AC, SailGP and most recently, the Etchells State Championship over the weekend.It would be great if as many people turn up for sailing with a 1730 splash so these new robotic marks can be tested in a race setting. We would like feedback from sailors and operators. Please come and see the future of racing!
Volly of the week
Double Bay Sailing Club is managed and run entirely by volunteers. As the saying goes, “many hands make light work. There is always work to be done in the upkeep of our shed and the ongoing running of dinghy racing.This week we’d like to thank Brett Beyer. While Brett is the club coach, he frequently goes above and beyond this role, assisting the club operations and sailors in unseen ways. On Saturday Brett, who was not coaching for the club on Saturday, mustered up and towed 22 boats home at the end of racing – this is a towing record even for Brett. Huge thanks to Brett who spent over an hour gathering boats and towing them back to the club. This demonstrates massive community spirit and is deeply appreciated.
Race Report 19 February 2022
On Saturday Double Bay sailors ventured up the harbour for the VYC regatta which was held in a fickle and fading ESE with a large outgoing tide. Only two of the anticipated three races were able to be conducted with Sylvie Stannage winning in the radial fleet and David Newman winning in the standard fleet. At the end of racing, the fleet was towed back to DBSC for a late finish and hasty rack shuffle. DBSC was supported by Tori Epworth and James Johnson, who did an excellent job of rounding up the troupes at the conclusion of racing. Off the water, Bonnie Nixon and Pia Hattersley assisted Paul and Shirley in the canteen. A special thanks also goes to Brett Beyer who was at the event and towed a number of Double Bay sailors home after racing.

Sailing stories with Malcolm Page
The club will be continuing our sailing stories events for members, this time with Malcolm Page on Wednesday 16thMarch after twilight sailing. Malcolm is a three time Olympian and dual gold medallist in the 470 class (Qingdao and London). He was the official Australian flag bearer at the closing ceremony of the London Olympics. Malcom has won the 470 men’s world championships six times and has also won world championships in the 420 and Tasar classes.Following his retirement from Olympic sailing, Malcolm worked at World Sailing as Head of Media, before becoming Chief of Olympic Sailing for US Sailing. He has now returned to Australian Sailing assuming the role of Mixed 470 coach.Malcolm is a deadest legend and all-round nice guy of Australian sailing. You won’t want to miss this event.We will be serving pizzas at 7.30pm for everyone to be seated at 7.45pm.

This weekend we have sprint racing at the club as there is an away regatta – the Laser Metropolitan Championships are up at RPAYC. (More information here.)The 18’ skiffs are also holding the J.J. Giltinan Regatta at the club from Thursday 3rd to 13th March. There are likely to be 18s in the park all week. There are likely to be boats and their respective crews doing repairs in the evening, and overnight security, so if you’re dropping in the club out of hours, you might find more company than usual.Given the rain, the state of the harbour, the condition of the boat park and the 18’ skiff event, we have decided to suspend the Clean Up Australia Day activities at the club this weekend.
