DBSC Welcomes Return to Racing

After ten long weeks of COVID-19 restrictions that prevented us from racing, members were ecstatic at last Sunday’s start to the Winter Championship. Despite the frigid morning, 23 keen sailors arrived at the crack of dawn for the first three races of the series. There was a nice moderate westerly breeze of 6-12kts and good close racing. The lead changed multiple times during races, and the wins were shared around too. The winners were: Standards: David Newman (race 1), Jules Hall (race 2), Luke Parker (race 3); Radials:  Brooke Wilson (race 1), Otto Henry (race 2), Sylvie Stannage (race 3).We appreciate the efforts of all sailors in observing the COVID requirements. Thanks to PRO Andrew Cox, COTD Christine and Tim Patton, CCO David Murphy, and to Brett Beyer for running the BBWP.We look forward to seeing everyone back at the club on Sunday morning for heats 4-6 of the Winter Champs.

Changes to the Winter Championship SIs

Due to COVID-19 restrictions we have slightly altered the Sailing Instructions for the Winter Championship. Please note the following:The radials/4.7s (first warning at 8.00am) will have a separate start from the standards (first warning at 8.30am) in all races.  The start sequence for all starts will be a normal five minute sequence as used for the Club Championship, not the modified sequence as set out in the SIs for the Winter Championship.

Don’t Let the Paul Adam RIB Sink

The Paul Adam RIB needs to have its bungs in place before lowering into water. It’s critical you do this, otherwise the boat will sink. It is equally critical that the bungs are removed at the end of the day (otherwise the boat will fill up with water and break the davits). Please see photos below.

Andrew Cox holding the bungs.

Inserting the bungs.

In addition to this, please note the following:The battery switch for the Paul Adam must be turned off at the end of the day. It is in

Racing Returns This Sunday Morning

Get your winter woollies ready. Racing returns to DBSC with our Winter Championship this Sunday morning. This will be the first of 8 Sundays of racing for the series, which will conclude on 26 July. We’ve had a great response so far – over 20 members have signed up, with strong competitive fields in both fleets. If you are interested in participating in the Winter Series, and if you haven’t done so already, you must fill out this form.It is likely that we will have more than 10 boats in some fleets at least some weeks, which will require special COVID-19 segregation strategies in the clubhouse and the park. Remember that due to public health restrictions no more than 10 people can be in the clubhouse or in the rigging area at one time.To avoid this Radials will arrive at 7.00 for a 7.25 splash and 8am start. Full rigs will arrive

60 Seconds With John Chesterman

Even though John won the Club Person of the Year award at this year’s AGM, he is still a man of mystery to some. Here’s your chance to get to know him a bit better. 1. How old were you when you first stepped on a boat?As soon as I had the lung capacity to blow one up. 2. If money (& sailing ability) were no limit, what boat would you buy? A Moth. NOT going to happen. It’s mostly the latter problem.3. What is your sailing goal?To make it to the club more often.4. Tell us the back story to your laser’s name?Finn Alexander has a better idea of that. I bought it from a guy that bought it from one of his mates. I think seeing ‘Derek’ brings back fond memories for Clare so haven’t changed the name.5. If you could add any ingredient to our already world’s best toasties –
