U21 ILCA European Championships

A massive congratulations to our DBSC sailors (and youth coaches!) Dan Costandi and Brooke Wilson, who have just finished a highly successful campaign in Stavanger, Norway, at the U21 European Championships.Dan qualified for the gold fleet and then went on to finish 8th overall (from 150 competitors).Brooke finished 25th overall (from 72 competitors).A fantastic effort, guys!!

RACE REPORT 12 AUGUST 2023

Sprint RacingIt was another beautiful day on Sydney Harbour. The wind was light and shifty, starting out as a 6 – 8 knot north westerly, then veering to the north before returning back to a southwest over the course of the afternoon. More than 20 boats turned out, across the three fleets with the majority being Radials, thanks to the development squad as they continued their Saturday training.Five races were run over the course of the day and with many course changes. Each race was 15 to 20 minutes long with quick starts trying to keep everyone sailing as long as possible. Annual Working BEE Saturday 19 August 2023

The annual working bee will be conducted on Saturday 19 August from 8am. This annual event takes considerable planning and is necessary in order to ensure our club is ready to run smoothly for the summer season. All members are expected to attend – there is a significant amount of work to be done. If you are unable to attend on the day, please contact the Commodore, Steven London, and arrange for a job to be undertaken at a time convenient to you.

Brett Beyer Saturday ProgramDon’t forget to register for the Brett Beyer Saturday Program coming summer season. It will run for 8 sessions on 9 Sep, 16 Sep, 23 Sep, 7 Oct, 21 Oct, 28 Oct, 4 Nov, and 11 Nov.  The cost of the program is $560 (plus merchant fees) per person, and this pricing is dependent on 20 participants. 2023 South Pacific Laser MastersFarther up the coast, the South Pacific Masters wrapped up at RQYS on Monday, 10 July. 18 Standards, 37 Radials and two 4.7’s took part. Results are here.

Disko Trooper in the Fastnet

Jules Hall and Jan (Clogs) Scholten are in the UK making their final preparations to compete in the Rolex Fastnet in the double-handed category. This the 50th anniversary of this iconic race and some 500 boats are entered. The start is Saturday 22 July. The pair had a very successful Hobart Race in 2021, taking 1st in the 2-Handed IRC division, and 2nd in 2-Handed Line Honours. This time their J-99 Disko Trooper – Contender Sailcloth will competing in a much larger field of 108 double-handers.

The race is 690 nautical miles, starting from Cowes in the south of England, west to Ireland, then around the Fastnet Rock and back up the English

WHAT'S GOING ON – WINTER SCHOOL HOLIDAY EDITION

RACING RESUMES ON SUNDAY 23rd JULYTrusting all are enjoying the 3-week hiatus and spending some time with friends and family. Hopefully this means everyone’ll be pumped to resume the winter program. Good news is the days are starting to get longer.Might also be a good time to review the items on your boat’s “stuff-that’s-about-to-break” list. If, like me, you have an older Laser, there will something that qualifies, even if you haven’t yet identified it. Here’s a checklist (from personal experience):Re-rivet loose boom eye straps (before the holes get enlarged). Vang/kicker tang (these will eventually break due to fatigue of the stainless. If they don’t, you’re either not using enough vang, or are really good at keeping the boom out of the water!)Outhaul and vang primary
