PRO Andrew Cox reports:It was a tough day for the last races in our Spring Point Score Series. During the day, the BOM readings hit all but one of the 16 points on the compass, miraculously only missing SE. Fortunately, during the race period, the official recordings only showed a 45-degree shift range from ESE to ENE. However, as those sailors who were backwinded into the water shortly after the first radial start will attest, we felt shifts on the course throughout the afternoon all the way from NE to the “missing” SE. As if that did not make course-setting (and racing) hard enough, we had the Sail Sydney ILCA 6 fleet monopolizing the Dardanelles, leaving us to set an almost due-east “average-wind” course from somewhere north of Clark Island to somewhere north of the Point Piper YA Mark. After a couple of adjustments to the start line, we were off.

Last week we had 24 DBSC members compete at Sail Sydney across all three ILCA classes. Nine sailors were in the Olympic classes section, and Fifteen sailors competed in ILCA 4’s and 6’s across the Open section. There were some brilliant results, some key learnings and positive improvements, and above all…some highly competitive and enjoyable racing on Sydney Harbour.

Last Saturday saw a glorious start to the 2024 Autumn Point Score series with magnificent sunshine, beautiful blue skies, and a ten to twelve knot east north easterly blowing, along with a strong run out tide. A fleet of thirty-six boats joined us on the harbour for the first race, along with a handful of visitors and perhaps one or two sailors that may have forgotten to sign on using the sailor app.In the first race, the Radial fleet were a little too keen, not helped perhaps by the run out tide which led to a general recall before a black flag restored order at the restart. Are your foils in need of some love?
Many of us focus on our boat maintenance above the water, but when was the last time you looked at your rudder and center (dagger) board? Is it dinged? Scratched? Are the leading and trailing edges smooth or rough? Have you got a chip missing out of the back tip?Your foils are what keeps you going in a (mostly) straight line and pointing to where you want to be.A new set of foils will cost you upwards of $1,500, and repairing and fairing your board is an often overlooked part of boat maintenance. Club Summer Championships – Races 5 & 6A large fleet of 60 boats, including visitors, was met with 8 to 15 knots shifting between SSW to SSE. A southerly course was laid, with the top mark set well into Double Bay.The wind seemed to build over the course of the afternoon, gusting up to 18 knots, making for quick racing and allowing for plenty of time to enjoy the Championship BBQ.Both fleets showed some exuberance at the start of the first race, but this was promptly subdued with the appearance of the black flag.There were lots of tight battles right across the fleets in both races. PRO Jules Hall reports:The day started with the annual Competency Training – an important event at our club, refreshing our knowledge of the essential safety, race management and club boat procedures. You would be forgiven for thinking your PRO was not in attendance for the race management part, but he was, and he listened quite hard. Which was lucky because Huey was in for some games on the afternoon racetrack.With an 8kt easterly at 2pm we laid a Dardanelles course, tapping into a nice funnelling effect between Shark Island and Point Bethwaite.
